What Does it Mean to be Allergic to Nuts?

Tree nuts are considered to be food allergens, meaning that the allergic reaction occurs after their consumption. The reaction can be immediate or delayed up to 48 hours after ingestion of the nuts. It can affect one or more systems: skin, respiratory tract, the digestive system or even the cardiovascular system [1]. The nut allergy affects about 1% of the population, in general (all kinds of nuts: walnuts, almond, hazelnut, etc.) or specifically (in the case that interests us, hazelnuts only) [2].

Since the hazelwood jewelry should be worn and not eaten (!), there is therefore no risk of reaction for people with food allergies to tree nuts. We also recommend that the child necklace be of an adequate size so that it falls under the child’s chin; that way, the child cannot bring the necklace to his or her mouth.

Are There Any Risks Associated to Inhaling or Wearing the Hazelwood Necklace?

It may happen that some severe food allergies cause reactions not only during ingestion, but also during the inhalation or contact with the food. For example, in very rare cases, a fish cooking vapors could cause a reaction to someone who is allergic to fish [1]. However, the inhalation or contact to hazelnuts does not apply to Pure Hazelwood necklaces and bracelets, as all hazelnuts are covered by a rigid and thick shell that protects them from contact with the branches that we use. In addition, our rigorous eco-friendly hazelwood harvesting methods ensure that the hazel branches do not touch the nuts at any time. We pay special attention when cutting the wood.

Can I Be Allergic to Hazel Wood?

Hazel wood is known to be hypoallergenic, meaning the risks of allergic reactions is greatly minimized. However, if you have an allergy which takes you to believe that you could develop intolerance or a reaction to the hazel wood, we strongly suggest that you ask your doctor in order to be reassured. No one knows your body better than yourself, and there are as many types of allergies as people who suffer from them... Do not hesitate to contact us for more information!
